Joseph Edward Moran, Sr.

Joseph Edward Moran, Sr., 84, formerly of James Island and Folly Beach, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 11, 2017. The relatives and friends Joseph E. Moran, Sr., are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Folly Beach. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Wednesday evening, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 27, 1933, the only son of the late Peter Edward Moran and Dorothy Lurinda Whiteman Moran.Joseph (Joe) attended school in Wilmington and sang in his church choir. He joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Sea Scout and achieved the rank of Life Scout. Before Joe could earn the rank of Eagle Scout, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, where he served aboard the destroyer tender USS Mellette. While stationed in Charleston, Joe met his wife of 54 years, Martha Rabb. They were married in St. Mary’s Catholic Church on May 31, 1954 and together raised six children. After serving in the Navy, he became a U.S. Customs Inspector, a position he held for over 20 years. After leaving the Customs Service, Joe worked for Evergreen America Corporation as the Business Manager until his retirement. A devout Catholic, he joined the Knights of Columbus, which became an integral part of his life. In 1970, as a Fourth Degree member, he was elected and served as Deputy Grand Knight of the newly formed Pope John XXIII Council 6250 at Nativity Church, and as Grand Knight from 1971-1972. Joe was elected and served as the South Carolina KofC State Deputy from 1976-1978. After moving to Folly Beach, Joe became an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, as a member of the OLGC Men’s Club and enjoyed leading the congregation in singing hymns. Once a month, Joe could be found cracking and mixing eggs for the Men’s Club breakfasts served at the Church Hall. Joseph is survived by his children, Joseph E. Moran, Jr. (Susan), Dorothy M. Dempster (Dymond), Paul A. Moran, William F. Moran, Mary M. Kinney (Michael), Anita M. Burns (Jeff); his grandchildren, Joseph E. Moran, III (Ellie), Lebby Moran, Robert Dempster, Alyssa Dempster, Ashley M. Yates (Stewart), SGT. Cody Moran (Whitney); and great-granddaughters, Isabella and Olivia Yates. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Martha and grandson, Paul Lewis Moran.
