Joseph Lawrence Gorman, Sr., 81, beloved husband of Carolyn Hoyle Gorman, died at home August 8, 2018, following a long battle with cancer. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Gorman, Sr., are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 13, 2018, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal at Holy Cross Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Sunday afternoon, with a Vigil Service to begin at 5:30 PM, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
Joe was born in Charleston on May 7, 1937, the sixth of seven children of the late James Joseph Gorman and Marguerite Hoppmann Gorman. Following graduation from Bishop England High School, he served four years in the United States Air Force, including overseas duty in Turkey.
After completing his military service, he became a Real Estate Appraiser with a private appraising company in Charleston. He moved with that company to North Carolina and helped appraise two counties there. When he returned home, he became a Real Estate Appraiser with Charleston County and helped reappraise Charleston County in the early 1970's. While working full time, he went to night school and graduated from Palmer College.
He worked for many years as director of several City of Charleston playgrounds, which included coaching many sports. He later worked for the Charleston County School System and the Medical University of South Carolina, where he retired.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph L. Gorman, Jr., and Julia Gorman of Charleston. He also is survived by two brothers, Hugh W. Gorman (Sally) of Yonges Island and Michael F. Gorman (Sandra) of Ravenel; a sister, Margaret G. MacGregor of Charleston; 16 neices and nephews, and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John F. Gorman and James J. Gorman, Jr., and a sister, Ann G. Gerald, all of Charleston.
