John Adler Quinby, of Johns Island, S. C. passed away early Wednesday morning, May 6, 2009 at a local hospital. He was the son of the late Bertrand Adlar and Lillie Estelle Burn Quinby. Born Tuesday, February 4, 1936 in Charleston, S.C., he attended Charleston City Schools graduating from Charleston High School and attended the College of Charleston. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medic stationed in Germany. He retired from the South Carolina State Ports Authority. John was an artist, and a biologist, collecting different wildlife specimens, contributing them to the Charleston Museum and to his own collection. An enthusiastic sailor, he owned his own sailboat sailing the coastal waters from Charleston to the Florida Keys. He is survived by four sisters: Edna Quinby Morgan of Clyo, GA, Lillian C. Quinby, Catherine Quinby Pinckney, and Vivvian Quinby Huthmacher all of Johns Island, S. C. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by two sisters; Gladys E. Quinby and Marian Quinby McDonald. Funeral services will be held at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 1:00 P.M.
