John Robert Pelletier

January 31, 1941 — August 3, 2021

John Robert Pelletier, 80, beloved husband of Carolyn Gustafson Pelletier, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, in Mount Pleasant, SC.

In addition to Carolyn, his wife of forty years, he is survived by his daughter Margaret Alexander Trezies (Meghan), her husband Maurice Anthony Harris Trezies (Mo), her son Baze Alexander Duckworth (16), and their daughter Elin Elizabeth Trezies (8). He is also survived by his brother David M. Pelletier and his wife, Evelyn M. Pelletier, and his sister-in-law, Ann Phillips Gustafson.

Born in Detroit, MI on January 31, 1941, John later studied journalism and graduated in 1964 from Michigan State University. He was especially formed by and proud of his achievements as a member of the MSU varsity fencing team and later qualified for and was greatly honored to participate in the Olympic Trials. He cultivated a long and successful career in international advertising and promotions in the hospitality industry, building relationships worldwide that have endured.

Following his retirement in 2005, John worked tirelessly with the Military Magnet Academy in North Charleston, SC and continued his spiritual journey as an oblate of St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. He dedicated many years in support of the ministries of Church of the Holy Communion as vestry member and senior warden. In later years, he continued his spiritual journey to the Catholic Church through Corpus Christi Catholic Community and the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.

Loved by so many people, John’s nicknames included “King John,” “Gentleman John,” and his favorite, “Boppa,” the name given him by his grandson, Baze. John lived an amazing life full of much love, deep friendships, robust conversation, big ideas, far-reaching generosity, a stalwart faith and a zeal for breaking bread together and traveling around the world. Even in his last years with clouds of dementia, he retained his gentleness, sweetness, and sense of humor.

Due to COVID concerns, a private family mass will be celebrated.

Gifts may be made in his honor to Military Magnet Academy Foundation for the Colonel Dawson Scholarship Fund, 2950 Carner Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
