John Joseph Kennedy, Sr.

John Joseph Kennedy, Sr., a retired Professional Civil Engineer and widower of Beatrice Bowman Kennedy, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 11, 2017. The relatives and friends of John J. Kennedy, Sr. are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Friday, September 15, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Thursday, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.  John was born January 27, 1924, in Charleston, SC, the son of the late James F. Kennedy, Sr. and Thomasine C. Kennedy. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He graduated from Bishop England High School and attended the College of Charleston and was a graduate of The Citadel, where he received a BS degree in Civil Engineering. John served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Certified Professional Engineer in South Carolina and was an active member in many local and national engineering associations. He was a life-time member of The Citadel Alumni Association.Surviving is his son, John J. Kennedy, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Johns Island, SC; two grandchildren, Melissa Kennedy Chaplin and Joseph Michael Kennedy and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, his dear and devoted companion and friend, Mrs. Barbara A. Willard. John was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Bowman Kennedy and his daughter, Janet Kennedy Tilton; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Cecile K. Peale and Rosemary H. Singleton and his three brothers, James F. Kennedy, Jr., Thomas W. Kennedy, Sr., and John Phillip 'JP' Kennedy.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to support The Citadel School of Engineering Excellence Fund, The Citadel Foundation, PO Box 119032, Charleston, SC 29423.
