John L. Joye Iii

John Leon Joye III, 83, of Charleston SC, husband of Joan Smith Joye, entered into eternal rest Saturday, January 8, 2022. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, James Island. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Tuesday January 18, 2022, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston.

Born in Charleston on October 8, 1938, a son of the late John Leon Joye Jr. and Julia Gertrude Seyle, John was raised by his adoptive mother Victoria Joye. He graduated from Bishop England High School in 1956, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Physics from the College of Charleston in 1965, and earned an MBA degree from Georgia State University in 1972.

John grew up in the city of Charleston and on James and Johns Islands. In his youth, he enjoyed swimming, camping, fishing, and exploring the barrier islands. He served in the South Carolina Army National Guard. For 30 years, John worked for Southern Bell in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia as a Manager in IT and Communications.

An avid pilot, John received his private pilot’s license in 1969 and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and founding member of Chapter 38 in Warner Robins, GA. After retirement, he completed training as a licensed Aircraft Airframe and Power Plant mechanic at the Middle Georgia Technical College in 2003. In addition to building and restoring multiple aircraft, he was active in the EAA Young Eagles program, introducing youth to general aviation.

John enjoyed the sport of sailing, owning multiple sailboats, and exploring the coastal waters of the eastern seaboard including Charleston, Savannah, and the Gulf Coast.

A current member of the St Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Daniel Island, and past member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Charleston, John was an active member in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Smith Joye; three sons, William A. Joye and wife Betsy of Watertown MA, Robert M. Joye and wife Rachel of Casa Grande AZ, Richard J. Joye and wife Tracy of Huntsville AL; five grandchildren: Christopher, Jessica, Kathryn, Sarah Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine; one great-grandchild, Bristol; and brother, Dennis Leroy Joye and wife Dee of Bonneau SC. He is predeceased by his brother Michael Robert Joye.
