John Hailey Hackett, Sr. CHARLESTON - John Hailey Hackett, Sr., 91, of Charleston, husband of Jewell Thompson Hackett, died Saturday. John was born in Charleston on October 15, 1920, a son of Harley B. and Alice Hailey Hackett. He was a graduate from the South Carolina School for the deaf and blind and was the first deaf Eagle Scout in South Carolina. John was a deacon at the Citadel Square Baptist Church and a 37 year employee with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He is survived by his wife Jewell; sons, John H. Hackett, Jr. and his wife Rebecca and James Oswald Hackett and his wife Ann; grandchildren, John H. III, Jackson and Mary; his sister, Mary Alice West, as well as numerous step children and step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth Edgeworth Hackett. The relatives and friends of Mr. John Hailey Hackett, Sr., are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 22, 2011, at Citadel Square Baptist Church, 328 Meeting St. Charleston.
