John Stephen Canning, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and respected engineer, passed away on April 17, 2025, at the age of 77 in Charleston, South Carolina.
His Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 25, 2025, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Born on May 29, 1947, John was a proud graduate of the University of Idaho. He dedicated over four decades of his life serving his country through his work with the United States Navy. Over a 45 year career, John rose to the role of Science Advisor to the Commander in Chief, specializing in the complex and often challenging fields of legality, ethics and the weaponization of unmanned systems. His work left a lasting impact on national defense and policy and he was widely admired for both his intellect and integrity.
John retired in 2015 but never stopped sharing his wisdom - especially through his legendary collection of dad jokes, which brought laughter to family, friends and colleagues alike. He was known as the most patient man you could ever meet - a quiet strength who listened deeply, loved generously and approached life with calm, steady grace.
John's legacy is one of service, gentleness and unwavering devotion to his family. In honoring his memory, his family encourages others to share a joke, lend a helping hand and remember the power of patience.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Veronica Canning; his children, Christopher Canning (Meredith Canning) and Cynthia Propst (Benjamen Propst), his six cherished grandchildren and his brother, Joseph Canning. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Canning (Jenniffer Canning) who passed away in February 2025.
