Joan Silverman Fabian, 93, entered into eternal rest May 1, 2025.
Joan's Graveside Funeral will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, May 23, 2025, at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, N. Charleston. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
Joan was born May 3, 1931, in Bronx, NY, and was the widow of Wilson L. "Willie" Fabian. She was the daughter of the late Gisella R. and Harry M. Silverman. Joan attended the public schools of New York City. She graduated from the Harrison M. Maitland Medical Center School of Nursing in Newark, NJ.
After passing her State Boards, Joan joined the Army Nurse Corps. and served at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, WA., where she met and married "Mr. Willie". She then served on Okinawa. Joan was Jewish.
In 1957, she came to Charleston and it became "home" to her. As a Registered Nurse, Joan worked at Roper Hospital and then at the Ralph N. Johnson VA Medical Center, where she retired after 27 years as the Operating Room Charge Nurse. Joan was very active in the local chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses.
Joan was employed by the West Ashley Internal Medicine Office until her retirement in 2010. Needing a "patient fix", Joan volunteered at the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic on Johns Island. She also volunteered at Bon Secours - Roper St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley.
Joan is survived by three sons: David T. Fabian, of Simpsonville, SC, Carey L. Fabian USMC (Ret.) of Virginia Beach, VA and Adam R. Fabian (Randi) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and five Grandchildren: Hannah Latham (Aaron) of Charleston, SC, Christopher, Nicholas, Madison, and Brianna Fabian of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Joan also had family in Virginia Beach, VA: Misty and Amanda DeVleeschower as well as Vicki, Keith, Matthew and Christopher Freitas. Joan leaves behind a niece and several nephews, in addition to many loving, caring and giving friends. She was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Cindy Fabian and Dodie Fabian.
Joan enjoyed being with family and friends, baking, especially her "ginger cookies", shopping and was an avid reader.
