Jessie Marie Dillow Atkinson, 93, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on the morning of September 30, 2024.
One of twelve children, she was born June 19, 1931, in Tazewell, Virginia to the late Kelly Harlow Dillow and Elizabeth Irene Catron Dillow.
Jessie graduated from Tazewell High School in 1949, where she played forward on the girls basketball team. She graduated from Roper Hospital/MUSC in Charleston, SC as a registered nurse in 1953. Jessie married Harry Elwood Atkinson, USMC, in 1955. She traveled and lived coast to coast and abroad working as a registered nurse until the birth of her first child in 1957. After raising two children, Jessie returned to nursing at the Red Cross of Charleston until retirement.
Jessie was an active member of Old St. Andrew’s Parish Church for over 40 years and served in the Annual Tea Room.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Harry Elwood Atkinson, her son Harry (Hank) Elwood Atkinson, Jr., and her second husband Alden (Sam) Anderson Scott, USAF.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Drew Atkinson Putt of Atlanta; her granddaughters, Jessica Atkinson Wooton (Moncks Corner, SC), Victoria Virginia Atkinson (Happy Valley, OR) and Catron Wallace Putt (Austin, TX); her 2 grandsons, Caperton Alexander Putt (Atlanta, GA) and Harry Davenport Putt (Atlanta, GA); brother, James (Jim) C. Dillow and wife Betty (Beech Grove, IN); two great granddaughters, Lucy Pearl Wooton (Moncks Corner, SC) and Lydia Rosewood Atkinson (Happy Valley, OR); two great grandsons, Keanu Louis Atkinson (Happy Valley, OR) and Clark Elwood Wooton (Moncks Corner, SC); two step-daughters, Cindy Scott Ries (Virginia) and Cathy Scott Archer (Maryland); and a host of nephews, nieces, in-laws and friends.
The relatives and friends of Jessie D. Atkinson are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 15, 2024, at Old St. Andrew's Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston. The Burial will follow in the churchyard, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. The family will receive friends between 3:00 and 5:00 PM, Thursday evening, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jessie's honor may be made to Old St. Andrew’s Parish Church.
