Jean Agnes Sims, 80, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on June 25, 2024. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. Rite of Committal will be private. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM, Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Born in Vulcan, MI on May 12, 1944, she is the daughter of the late John Yourkoski and Stella Yourkoski. Jean graduated from Vulcan High School and received her RN in Michigan, she received her certificate in Ophthalmology from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Jean worked at the Ralph A. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston for over 40 years. During her career Jean received many recognitions and citations for exemplary service from The Veterans Administration.
Jean married Carl Sims on May 27, 1987. Together Jean and Carl enjoyed ornithology expeditions where she documented the identity of over 300 native birds. She was a member of the Women’s Crochet Club that crocheted hats for premature babies born throughout the tri-county area. Her hobbies included crocheting blankets, gardening and was an avid runner competing in the annual Cooper River Bridge run. A member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, she served as a Eucharistic Minister, in the Perpetual Adoration Society and was a member of the Women’s Guild serving as president for several terms. Together, Jean and Carl were instructors for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at Blessed Sacrament.
Jean is survived by her husband Carl enjoying 38 years of marriage. She is survived by her sisters Viola Stanchina, Mary Hoheisel (Bob), Theresa Saxton (Ray), Anne Wellman (Glenn). She is also survived by many nephews and nieces. Jean was predeceased by her brothers Jimmy and John.
