Janice Stinson Conklin

Janice Stinson Conklin (Jan) entered into eternal rest on July 20, 2020. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jan was born on May 18, 1929, in Atlanta, GA, daughter of the late James William Stinson and the late Mary Ruth Griffin Stinson. Jan graduated from Girls High School in Atlanta in 1947 and afterwards attended night school at the University of Georgia Atlanta Division. She met her future husband Otis Roscoe Conklin on a blind date, while he was teaching at Georgia Tech. They moved back to Charleston where she helped him run the family clothing store Conklins while raising three daughters. In addition to being a homemaker, Jan also volunteered at the Gibbs Art Gallery and Old Saint Andrews Episcopal Church. Her second career began in the office of Senator Fritz Hollings in 1982. She had a successful career as a staff assistant secretary in the Charleston Office for 21 years before retiring. After she and Otis moved to James Island, they began attending St. James Episcopal Church and Jan volunteered at the James Island Senior Center where she met many wonderful friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband Otis, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles (Thelma), Clyde (Jonnie), Jack (Gladys) and James (Pat).

She is survived by her three daughters, Margaret Suzanne (Suzy) Hayden, Mary Rhett Conklin, and Cheryl Jan Fuller; her grandchildren, Anna Rhett Miller (Robert), Alexander (Alec) Cobb (Julie), David Bird (Jamie), Griffin Bird (Nikki), Edward Bird (Ashley) and Michael Fuller. She also leaves behind 5 beautiful great-grandchildren, Leyton, Logan, Noah, Davey and Mason, and her beloved nieces and nephews, Pamela Stinson, Leslie and James Watkins, Andy and Beth Stinson, Mark and Tracy Stinson and Kirk and Lori Stinson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Saint James Anglican Church, 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
