James Avent Tadlock

September 21, 1946 — May 11, 2023

We are heartbroken to announce the death of James (Jim) Avent Tadlock, 76, of North Charleston, SC. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Jim will be remembered by many for his love of the simple things in life. He enjoyed relaxing on the beach, seafood dinners with family and friends, long mountain drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and playing his favorite songs on his guitar.

Jim was born on September 21, 1946, in Grenada, Mississippi to his mother, Elizabeth Locke, and biological father Ned McCalop. He was raised in Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, and England by his mother and stepfather Henry Luther Tadlock. A proud veteran, he served honorably in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Saigon during the Vietnam War. During his service, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his constant devotion to duty and his exceptional knowledge of administrative and security procedures in defense of the Tactical Air Control Center at Tan Son Nhut Airbase. He spent most of his career working in global logistics, supervising airfreight operations for Emery Worldwide at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, NC.

Jim was a kind, selfless, devoted man who will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Dinah Tadlock (née Steele), of 53 years, a love he prioritized above all others. Those who knew Jim know that he was often indecisive, but he would tell you that committing to Dinah was the easiest and greatest decision he made during his time here on Earth. In addition, he is survived by his siblings; sister Pamela (Richard) Sullivan of Charlotte, NC and brother Kenny (Lesa) Tadlock of Shelby, NC. He was blessed with two daughters, Michele McWaters (Whiteford) of Summerville, SC and Amy Whitworth (Michael) of Tega Cay, SC; and a son, Joseph Tadlock (Amanda) of Summerville, SC. Jim was especially proud of his grandchildren, Noah Whitworth, Logan Alden, Marilyn Whitworth, Ellie Tadlock, and Josephine Tadlock. He was loved by all and is also survived by many members of his extended family and close friends, notably his best friend of 60 years Michael (Mike) Hamrick of Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
