Entered into eternal rest on June 17, 2012, J. Russell Shiver, Jr. Russell was born on June 16, 1965 and grew up in Georgetown, South Carolina. He graduated from Winyah High School and attended Saint Leo's College in Saint Leo, Florida, as well as the College of Charleston and Daytona Community College in Florida. After college he spent his younger adult life in the Southeast Atlantic Coastal area of Florida, which he dearly loved. Russ was an avid swimmer, surfer, and beach comber who always had sand between his toes and a bronze tan on his back. A few years ago, Russell returned to the low country and could always be found on the beaches of Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach and Pawley's Island, doing what he loved best. Russ loved all animals and will be sadly missed by Sophie, Lucy, Bailey and most especially, 'Puppy' Ellis. Two years ago he formed the Lanakila Paddleboard Company and established himself with Diego Akaluka of Honolulu, Hawaii, to manufacture his paddleboards. He enjoyed nothing more than getting away from the office and warehouse on weekends to give free paddleboard lessons at Station 29 on Sullivan's Island. He is survived by his parents, J. Russell and Diane Cottingham Shiver of Mount Pleasant; a brother, Michael T. Shiver, also of Mount Pleasant; and a sister, Anna Kristin Onder and her husband Joseph of White Fish, Montana. He will be missed by his five nephews, Matthew, Nick, Lucas, Jacob Shiver and their mother Quincy Luce Shiver and Austin Clark. He will also be missed by his one special sweetheart, Sarah Gutgsell and her mother, Vanessa Gutgsell of Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by his maternal aunt, Mary Lou McManus, of Atlanta, paternal aunts and uncles, Mary and Marion Broughton, Agnes and Michael Seay, and a multitude of cousins. The many friends who loved Russ, know of his kind and gentle nature, and as one whose early departure from us is a tremendous loss. We pray that God grant him the peace and serenity that he could not find, but so desperately sought, in this life. The relatives and friends of J. Russell Shiver, Jr. are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Friday, June 22, 2012, at Christ Our King Catholic Church.
