Houston, TX - Mr. James Melvin Newton, 69, formerly of Charleston, SC, died November 25, 2014. The relatives and friends of James M. and Miriam N. Newton are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Friday, December 5, 2014, at the Catholic Church of the Nativity, 1061 Folly Road on James Island. The Rite of Committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens on Hwy. 61, Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5 & 7 PM Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. A native of Charleston, SC, James was a son of the late Christopher C. and Pearl F. Newton. He was a retired Director of Engineering with Compaq Computers. James dearly loved his family, his kids, his grandchildren, and was a sports fanatic all the way. Every Saturday was game day for him and Chad. The Carolina Gamecocks lost a great fan on November 25, 2014. He enjoyed watching Kim perform when she was a Texas Pom at The University of Texas. James spent 13 years watching Chad play baseball. He loved spending every weekend watching Chad play college baseball at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. Those were some of his greatest memories. Yes, he loved going to Vegas with Kim and Paul, and what great fun we had. He was also a big-time movie watcher. In addition to his wife Miriam, James is survived by his daughter Kim Newton Pickrell and husband Paul, son Chad Newton and wife Shaden, 6 grandchildren: Bowen, Kate, Chase Pickrell & Arwa, Malik, Maysoon Newton; 2 sisters, Joann N. Roland, Susan N. Smith. He was preceded in death by his brother, Christopher C. Newton. James will truly be missed by all his family who loved him dearly with all our hearts.
