Stan was born in Columbia, SC on December 23, 1941, to the late George Elmer and Helen Meridian Coleman Hurteau.

He graduated from The Citadel in 1965 and served in various leadership positions. Stan was a member of the Board of Visitors, the college’s governing body and as a past president of The Citadel Alumni Association. He was a member of the original steering committee that formed the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and was named the Citadel Foundation’s executive director in December 1991, a position he held for 17 years. Of the many contributions he made during his tenure at The Citadel, one of the first was changing the organization’s name from The Brigadier Club that was chartered in 1957 to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Stan also played a primary role in building the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Prior to his work at The Citadel, Stan spent 27 years in the local banking industry holding executive positions at SC National, Liberty National, Southern Bank and Trust and The Bank of Charleston. During this time he earned a graduate degree from the LSU School of Banking of the South. Stan also held memberships in the Hibernian Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, the SC Bankers’ Association, Ducks Unlimited, SC Saltwater Fishing Association, Ravenwood Hunt Club and the Rookie IV Sport Fishing Team. He also loved to watch Citadel football, baseball, and his grandchildren’s soccer games.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon C. Hurteau; his son, James Stannard Hurteau, Jr. and his wife, Jamye Horres Hurteau; and grandchildren Caroline Taylor and James Stannard Hurteau III all of Charleston. He is also survived by his brother, Brigadier General Joseph Coleman Hurteau, Sr. and his wife, Minnie as well as two nieces and a nephew.

The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to Angelena, Barbara, Kena, and Sherline as well as the fourth floor nurses at Roper Hospital and Mr. Eddie for the outstanding care they provided Stan and his family.
