James William Horkey

James W. Horkey, 84, of Charleston, SC, husband of Lois S. Horkey, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, January 10, 2024 of old age and natural causes. The relatives and friends of James and Lois Horkey are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1659 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston. Interment will take place at a later date.

James was born June 4, 1939 in Baltimore, MD to the late William Horkey and May Horkey. He grew up in Arbutus, MD and lived most of his adult life in the Baltimore Area. He moved to the Charleston area to be closer to family in 2019.

James is a veteran and served on active duty in the Maryland National Guard. Later he worked as a mechanic at Baltimore Aircoil. In his later years he was devoted to the Catholic Church, was a member of the third order of Franciscans, acted as RCIA director at his parish in Maryland and volunteered countless hours of his time to the needy and less fortunate.

James enjoyed gardening and was a talented woodworker carving many lifelike and award winning waterfowl decoys. He was a quiet and humble man who would give the shirt off of his back to anyone in need. He was well-read and well-studied in biblical theology and enjoyed bible studies, attending biblical based talks and lectures, was an avid reader of history and spent much of his time devoted to easing the suffering of others.

James is survived by his wife, Lois Horkey, and his children: Lisa Makar and Michael Horkey, as well as his 5 grandchildren (Zachary, Kelly, Mitchell, Gavin and Samuel).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund.
