Charleston, SC - Mr. James M. Gaskins, 91, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 9, 2013. A native of Huger, SC, he was a son of the late Daniel James "Jim" and Ida Parson Gaskins. A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Gaskins attended James Island Baptist Church. An Electrician by trade, Mr. Gaskins was retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard. An avid outdoors man, he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was also known by his nickname "Butterball". Mr. Gaskins was a true gentleman, and never met a stranger or someone he wasn't willing to help out in any way he could. Mr. Gaskins is survived by his wife of 28 years, Ann Gaskins, his Daughter Deloris Gaskins, Step-daughter Georganne Ridgill and husband Stephen Hicks, Step-son John C. Jones of Loris, SC, 3 Grandchildren Daniel Boyer (Heather), Janie D. Boyer, & Christian Hicks, 2 Great-grandchildren Katherine & Zara Boyer, his special nephew Keith Evans, 2 Brothers Jeff C. & Sidney Gaskins, 1 Sister Lenora Grooms, and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Gaskins was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma T. Gaskins, his daughter Judy Boyer (husband Paul survives), 2 sisters and 7 brothers. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Gaskins are invited to attend the funeral service for the former at 11:00 Thursday, September 12, 2013, from the chapel of James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. The family will receive friends between 6:00 & 8:00 PM Wednesday. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Highway 61, Charleston.
