James Daugherty went to his eternal rest on June 28, 2015. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Daugherty are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 3, 2015, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3876 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island, SC. The Rite of Committal will be at Mepkin Abbey at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 4, 2015. The family will receive friends at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, on Thursday between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. He is the son of James and Ardis Daugherty, the husband of Mary Jo Daugherty and the father of James Carl and Sarah Marie. James Daugherty passed because of kidney failure and chronic heart disease. Jim served for thirty years in the United States Army and retired in 1993 as a Colonel. They moved to Mount Pleasant in 1997 and to Johns Island in 2006. They are members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and Jim sang in the St. John the Baptist Cathedral Choir from 1997 until 2010. Jim served in the United States Army in the Adjutant General Corps, the branch that runs the Personnel System for the Army. He served all over the world. His most senior posts include Director of the Promotion System for the Army, Commander of the 8th Personnel Command in Korea and Commandant of the Adjutant School and Deputy Commander of Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. Jim served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. His individual awards include four Legions of Merit, The Bronze Star Medal for his service in Vietnam, six awards of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He also received some special awards that include the Order of The White Plume from The Adjutant General of the Army and three awards (one Bronze and two Gold) of the Horatio Gates Medal from the Adjutant General Corps. He retired from the Army in 1993 and promptly became the Personnel Director of the Washington, DC School District. After moving to the Charleston area, Jim co-owned a real estate company and formed a home repair company named Jimmy-Fixit. He later was hired as an Army civilian to travel and inspect various programs at Installations throughout the Army. He was born on January 20, 1941 in Pipestone, MN and graduated from Pipestone High School, St. Johns University in Collegeville, MN and Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA as well as all the appropriate schools in the US Army. He is preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, his two children, James Carl and Sarah Marie, and siblings, Dee Anna (Dave) Dorsey. Mary (Brian) Young, Joan (Dick) Clayton and Margaret (Jim) Zachau.
