James Leo Crowe Sr., 82, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Patricia Lynn Pfaehler Crowe, passed away peacefully at Roper-St. Francis Hospital on September 4, 2024.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. Honoring Jim’s wishes, there will be a private Interment ceremony.
Jim was born in Brockton, MA on November 5, 1941, to the late Leo E. Crowe and Gertrude Stetson Crowe. He graduated from Brockton High School and in 1961, graduated from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. He worked in Design and Development throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut before relocating to Charleston, SC in 1965 to work for Allstates Design. While completing additional studies at the Citadel, he worked in the Civil Service Design Division at the Charleston Naval Shipyard from 1968 until 1972. During this period Jim met his future wife, Patricia Lynn Pfaehler, whom he married in November of 1967.
Jim made a career shift in 1972 and became a life insurance Field Agent for the Knights of Columbus, quickly rising to General Agent in 1973. He oversaw a territory that included eastern Georgia and both Carolinas until his retirement in 2004. He was a Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FIC) and Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) who garnered numerous awards throughout his 32-year career.
A lifelong Democrat, he was a dedicated supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and active Party member. Jim proudly served as Chairman of the Charleston Housing Authority’s Commissioners Board and was also a former Chairman of the North and South Carolina Housing and Redevelopment Committee.
Jim was an avid reader with an enduring love of history and jazz music who traveled extensively with his wife and friends.
In addition to his wife Patricia Lynn, he is survived by his two children: Theresa Fedorenko (Michael) and James L. Crowe Jr., M.D. ; four grandchildren: Alexandra Fedorenko, Andrew C. Fedorenko, Leo P. Roumillat-Crowe and Ruby S. Roumillat-Crowe ; his beloved sisters: Cheryl Randall (David) and Karen Crowe; his loving sister-in-law Sondra Pfaehler and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge his dear friend Gary Lamberson, Esq. and the entire Rosenberg family.
Pallbearers are: cherished family friends Michael and Stephen Rosenberg; son James L. Crowe Jr.; grandsons Leo Roumillat-Crowe and Andrew Fedorenko; and his son-in-law Michael Fedorenko.
