Jack Vane Charleston - Jack Vane, a well-known Charleston businessman, passed away peacefully at home on December 15, just as he had lived - surrounded by family, love and laughter. He was 87, and died of heart failure, according to his son, Jay Vane. Born in Charleston on June 30th 1924 to Daniel Vane and Sarah Lauper Vane and a lifelong resident of the city, Jack Vane was especially known for his charm, exuberance and wit. He engaged whomever he met in cheerful conversation, which usually included an invitation to visit Charleston if they were from out of town. "Encounters with Jack Vane almost always ended with a chuckle and a recognition that warm banter was his gift," said his son, Adam Vane. Mr. Vane attended the High School of Charleston and graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville GA. He attended Georgia Tech and then started his career as a partner in Vane's United Phonograph Company, the appliance dealership founded by his father. After Jack Vane took over, the business expanded into selling furniture and changed the name to Vane's Appliance and Furniture Co. Later Mr. Vane was president of the American Mortgage Investment Company, and after that the National Car Rental operations in Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Beaufort. While he had that business, he served on the council of National Car Rental franchisees, which met periodically with the company's management in Minnesota on behalf of the franchisees. Until fairly recently Mr. Vane's business interests included part ownership of the Ashley Marina as well as Park & Go, which he founded with his son, Jay. A long-time member of Congregation K. K. Beth Elohim, Mr. Vane served a term on its Board. One of his favorite affiliations was with The Babes of 1924, made up of Charleston compatriots born in 1924 who meet monthly for lunch. He and his wife have also been generous supporters of the Spoleto Festival since its inception. Jack Vane is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judith Singer Vane, and two sons, Jay Steven Vane of Sullivan's Island (Rachel Gossett Vane) and Adam Nathan Vane of New York (Kathleen Smith Vane). He also left three granddaughters of Sullivan's Island: Sarah Reed Vane, Sarah Grace Beaty and Catherine Elizabeth Beaty and his beloved cousin Seymour Rudich. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Rita Vane Mazo. The family would also like to thank his loving caretaker, Jonathan Bennett. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Vane are invited to attend the funeral service of the former at 2:00 PM Monday, December 19, 2011, at the graveside, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue, Charleston, SC.
