His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM, Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Friday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
Hugh was born in Charleston on July 24,1931, a son of the late James J. Gorman and Marguerite Hoppmann Gorman. He was a graduate of Bishop England High School. Hugh joined the U.S. Air Force after graduating where he met his wife in Brownville, New York. He then returned to Charleston where he began a career as a photo engraver for the Post & Courier.
Hugh was well known as a basketball, baseball, football and boxing coach to many at St. Andrews Parks & Playground from the 1960s' through the 1990s' as well as coaching at Blessed Sacrament, Sea Island Academy and St Paul’s Country Day schools and the community baseball field in Hollywood, S.C.
Hugh was a devout Catholic. He loved his family and always hosted gatherings at his home. Hugh was loved and respected by the community for his dedication, devotion and love for his wife. He dedicated each day going and sitting with the love of his life twice a day, although she didn’t know who he was, rest assured he never wanted her to be alone.
Hugh is preceded in death by his brothers: James J. Gorman, Joseph L. Gorman, John Francis Gorman, his sister, Ann G. Gerald as well as a great grandchild, Ridley.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sally Matteson Gorman, his children: Hugh W. Gorman, Jr. (Tammy) of Ravenel, Robert A. Gorman of Meggett, Timothy P. Gorman (Celeste) of Cross, Thomas A. Gorman, Sr. (Vickie) of Charleston, John F. Gorman (Ruth) of Gainesville, GA and Teresa Gorman Parish (Johnny) of Meggett, his 14 grandchildren, his 20 great grandchildren, his brother, Michael F. Gorman (Sandra) of Charleston, (Sandra) and his sister, Margaret Gorman McGregor, both of Charleston.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church Building Fund,4255 Hwy. 165, Yonges Island, SC 29449.
