Hilda S. Hamrick

August 16, 1936 — June 23, 2025

Hilda Smith Hamrick, 88, of Charleston, widow of George Harper Hamrick, Jr., went to join her husband George in Heaven on Monday, June 23, 2025.

Her Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 26, 2025, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, Charleston. The burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.

Hilda was born in Georgetown, South Carolina on August 16, 1936, to the late Ivan Smith and the late Ruthe S. Parham. She was the oldest of three siblings and three step siblings whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her three daughters: Ruthie Hamrick Herrin, Anne Hamrick Davis (Wade) and Mary Hamrick Hoover (Sean Lawless), all of Charleston; six grandchildren: Sherry Tahquette (Brandon), Megan Snyder (Hudson), Erin Granberry (Clifton), Meredith Hoover (Chappell Maddox), Parrish Hoover, Bridgett Hoover (Connor McCraw) and Lauren Lawless as well as six great-grandchildren: Cheyenne, Leah, Josiah, Trevor, Juan, and KK Tahquette, all of Charleston, whom she loved and was so very proud of. She is also survived by Pepper, a miniature schnauzer, her constant companion. She is survived by her brother Bruce Smith, sister-in-law Barbara Smith, and brother-in-law William King.

Hilda was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and daughter who enjoyed life to its fullest. She graduated from St. Andrew's High School in 1954 and attended Furman University. After raising her three children, Hilda joined George at Hamrick-Carter Real Estate as a licensed real estate broker. Hilda was also dedicated to service, acting as past treasurer of the Garden Club of Charleston and as an active member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League. She was also a woman of strong faith, attending St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in downtown Charleston.

Ever the social butterfly, she enjoyed bridge with her Country Club of Charleston friends and loved playing tennis in her fifties and sixties. She could be found every Friday night out with her close group of friends whose companionship she held dear until the end.

At every age, Hilda was the life and soul of her family. She and George built their home 52 years ago on James Island and it was the center of family gatherings and parties. Nearly every holiday was spent at the Hamrick household, where Hilda was surrounded by friends and family, and all who knew her will remember with fondness her dazzling family Christmas parties. She will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, George H. Hamrick, Jr., by her parents and her sister, Carolyn S. King.
