Obituary

Henry Ozroe Counts passed away peacefully Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born June 1, 1946, and grew up on a farm in Springfield, South Carolina, where he developed the values of hard work, a love of nature, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

Henry's Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October, 8, 2026 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

Henry was truly one of a kind, with a deep sense of humor, a gentle spirit, and a gift for storytelling. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, cherished brother, and loyal friend and neighbor. An exceptional Southern cook, Henry found joy in gathering around the table to share good food and laughter. He enjoyed travel and planned many family adventures that proved the opposite of restful but always memorable. He loved food and travel, but above all else, he loved his family.

Henry shared 52 wonderful years of marriage with his best friend and the love of his life, Caroline Samuels Counts. Together, they built a life filled with love, friendship, and unwavering devotion.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline; his son, Christopher Ozroe Counts and wife, Christina Lind Counts; and his daughter, Kimberly Counts Morganello and husband, Martin Anthony Morganello, and his sister-in-law, Gerline McCall Counts. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Catherine Ann Counts (17), Olin Ozroe Counts (13), Caroline Birdie-Mae Morganello (10), and Capers Marie Morganello (6). His grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, as did the many loyal dogs who shared his life over the years, most notably Toby, Monty, and Nilo.

Henry was preceded in death by his father, Olin Francis Counts; his mother, Blanche Jowers Counts; his brother, Olin Francis Counts, Jr.; and his sister, Anne Counts Brown.

Henry earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of South Carolina. As a result, he became a lifelong "wait until next year" Gamecock fan. USC also launched Henry's distinguished career in journalism, most notably the 30 years he spent at The Post and Courier in Charleston, where he served in many roles, including writer, editorial staff member, retail sales manager, outside print manager, and other leadership positions.

Henry also served his country with honor in the United States Army from December 1968 to August 1971. During the Vietnam War he earned both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice.

In 1976, Henry and Caroline built their dream home on James Island, where they lived together for more than 50 years. Their home became a gathering place for family and friends, always filled with warmth, laughter, delicious food, and usually a pretty good dog. It was there that countless memories were made and where Henry and Caroline welcomed generations of loved ones with open arms. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
