Henry F. Cauthen, Jr.

Henry Finlayson Cauthen, Jr., born in Columbia, on August 23, 1940, pioneering historic preservationist, died on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at his home at 67 Smith Street, in Charleston. He is the son of the late Henry F. Cauthen, Sr. and Sarah Norris Cauthen of Columbia. Mr. Cauthen led major historic preservation organizations and projects in Charleston and Columbia, as well as in Roswell, Georgia. He was an antiques dealer in his private life. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1961, majoring in journalism, having graduated from Columbia High School. He served his country in the Air Force National Guard. A former owner of the Trading Post in Columbia, he moved to Roswell Georgia to restore the town Square of Roswell and Bulloch Hall, the historic childhood home of President Theodore Roosevelt's wife. He was chosen to attend and in 1976 he graduated from the Attingham School of Historic Preservation in England, a school designed to examine the architectural and social history of the historic house in Britain and its gardens and landscape setting. He was the author of Charleston Interiors featuring photographs by renowned photographer N. Jane Iseley. He served for many years as the director of the Historic Preservation Society of Charleston and led early efforts to establish it as a major force in shaping the future of the City. He also held the responsibility of the first professional curator of Columbia's most historic properties including the Hampton-Preston House and the Robert Mills House and was the designer of the Boyleston Gardens, separating the Lace House and the Boyleston House, now a part of the Governor's Mansion complex. In addition he was the curator of the Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home in Columbia He was a gifted musician, with a natural ear for the classics, and a self-instructed organist. He was a long time member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul. He is survived by two sons, Henry F. Cauthen, III, and Capers Landrum Cauthen and their families, including four grandchildren and their mother, Louise Landrum Cauthen, all of Charleston. He is also survived by his sister, Sarah Cauthen Stepp, of Columbia. The relatives and friends of Henry F. Cauthen, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming St. Charleston, SC 29403.
