Helen Heiterer Garrett

Entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 11, 2009, Helen Heiterer Garrett, the wife of Thomas A. Garrett, Jr. of Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Garrett, Jr. are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 15, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery. Friends may call at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. this Sunday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM Helen was born in Charleston on March 5, 1933, a daughter of Theodore Laurence and Bridget Theresa Heavey Heiterer. She graduated from Bishop England High School and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Above all things, Helen treasured her family. As a full time mother and wife, she always made sure their needs were met before her own. She enjoyed all the times she spent at home with family laughing and catching up on the news. Helen could spend hours on the phone with her many sisters. Their times together were always special. Other pastimes included going to the movies and regular rides in downtown Charleston along the Battery. Helen was adored and loved by her husband and children. However, there was a special bond with her beloved son, Eddie. Although Helen spent her life caring for all her children, it was her special concern for Eddie and his for her, in the final years that made their relationship beautiful. Helen always had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. She lived her faith while actively participating in perpetual adoration, novenas and daily recitals of the Rosary. She will be missed by all the lives she touched. She is survived by her husband, Thomas A. Garrett, Jr.; her children, Joyce G. Bailey and her husband, Robert, Cathie G. Smith and her husband, Russell, Julie G. Lewis and her husband, Tom, Thomas A. Garrett III and his wife, Lee Ann, Edward L. Garrett and James H. Garrett and his wife, Jena; his grandchildren, Rob, Thomas, Mary Helen, Tony, John, Russel, Michael, Ashley, Thomas, Cameron, Madison, Jamie, Chandler and Collin as well as two sisters, Betty Gissell and Anne Knox.
