Beth Elohim Cemetery on Hugeunin Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harold and Lillian Jacobs Mitzvah Membership Fund at Congregation K.K. Beth Elohim, 90 Hasell St. Charleston, SC 29401. Mr. Jacobs was born in Charleston on December 7, 1913, the son of Samuel and Mignonette Cohen Jacobs. He attended Charleston High School and honorably served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II as an administrator and court instructor in the Judge Advocates section. As a young man he began selling snowballs in a small shop that looked like a cabin. This later became a neighborhood grocery store named Harold's Cabin. In 1954, they moved to a newer, much larger store on Wentworth Street, which had a mezzanine floor for a restaurant. Harold's Cabin carried an array of foods from around the world, catering to the carriage trade and had a list of customers that read like a list from the Fortune 500. The store was written up in several national magazines. The store was eventually sold and moved into the Piggly Wiggly on Meeting Street. Harold and Lillian continued to manage the specialty foods, mail order and catering departments. Mr. Jacobs retired from the store in 1978 and was offered a position with Adventure Travel as an agent. He handled group and individual travelers needs, and with his wife, visited over 46 countries including three group tours to Israel. A lifelong member of K.K. Beth Elohim, he served his community and his faith with love, energy, and compassion, and is the only President emeritus of K.K.B.E. Mr. Jacobs is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, and countless dear friends.
