Griffin Daniel Herbert, 30, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 9, 2026. The relatives and friends of Griffin Daniel Herbert are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad Street, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Tuesday at James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway.
Griffin Daniel Herbert was born on January 7, 1996 in Charleston, South Carolina to Robert and Lisa Herbert. He grew up in a loving family with three younger sisters, Kennedy, Taylor, and Emily. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and then Bishop England High School, where he excelled in academics and athletics. Griffin was a natural leader in all aspects of his life, including his role as a big brother, loyal friend, and father. He was very protective of his family, friends, and mainly his sisters and his daughter. He was always concerned about others' safety and well-being. Growing up, some of his favorite memories included vacationing with his family and in his true selfless nature, he was the first to offer sleeping on the couch.
He had the most infectious smile and lit up every room he entered. Griffin never met a stranger and was loved by everyone he met. He was humble and filled with compassion and consideration for everyone he encountered. The epitome of a kind soul and selfless man, he was always doing good deeds and helping others out of the goodness of his heart. He left a positive impression on everyone he crossed paths with, particularly during his years playing basketball and baseball. His teammates called him "Sherbert," and they admired his positive attitude. Even after his school years, Griffin enjoyed playing pickup basketball games and staying active at the gym. As a foodie, he also enjoyed the excitement of trying a new restaurant, especially a classic bacon egg and cheese sandwich.
On October 4, 2016, Griffin became a father and welcomed his beautiful daughter, Willa Kate, into this world. Being raised in a family-oriented environment, he recognized the importance of the role of being a dad and he truly cherished his time and bond with her. He loved her immensely and she loved him. In her words, "He loved me a lot and every time I was sad he always made me happy. Every time I came down the stairs, he always had a smile on his face so it made me smile. When he had a hard day, he still loved everyone no matter who they were or what they did." His love, light, and legacy will continue to shine on through his "Katie girl."
Griffin became a respected and proud member of the ILA 1771 Checker's Union where he formed friendships and appreciated the support of the brotherhood that the waterfront provided through the ups and downs of life. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his daughter, Willa Kate Herbert, his mother and father, Lisa and Robert Herbert, his sisters, Kennedy Herbert Miller (Ben), Taylor Herbert, and Emily Herbert, his grandfathers, Carl E. Wolff Jr. and Bobby D.W. Herbert and many other loved family members. He is predeceased by his grandmothers, Mary Virginia Wolff and Betty Louise Herbert.
