Entered into eternal rest on February 14, 2011, Glenda Miller Summerford, 60, Minister of Music at Pinecrest Baptist Church and wife of George Alan Summerford. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Summerford are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, Friday. February 18, 2011, at Pinecrest Baptist Church. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this Thursday evening between 5:00 and 8:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Glenda Sue Miller Summerford was born January 4, 1951 in Flomaton, Alabama to Fred and Frances Miller and graduated from Flomaton High School in 1969. She was an excellent student, a Beta Club member, majorette, Miss Flomaton Homecoming Queen and Escambia County's Junior Miss. She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1973 with a master's degree in music and performed additional work towards a doctorate. She taught music for 13 years at Jefferson Davis State Junior College and particularly enjoyed directing Show Choirs. Her choirs were recognized for their quality and innovations statewide. A number of her students attended major music conservatories. She additionally taught music at the University of West Florida for four years. She married George Summerford on June 1, 1978. She moved her family from Alabama to Florida, to Minnesota, to North Carolina and finally to Charleston, SC. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother of three children, Ginger, Grant and Ginny. She selflessly spent her life insuring her family had only the best opportunities. She was an incredibly inspiring wife and accepted nothing less than the best. Ginger is now married to Wil Gorrell and has three children, Annabel, Clara and Alan. Grant is married to Priscilla and Ginny to Max Cobb. She was always fiercely protective and proud of her children. Over the past few years, she selflessly cared for her mother in her home. While devoting her life to her family, she also passionately enjoyed University of Alabama football, never missing anything from the Crimson Tide. Her witness for Jesus is best exemplified in her directing church choirs at Littleton Baptist Church and Pinecrest Baptist in Charleston. She was always careful to give all the glory to God in lieu of accepting praise for herself. She worked tirelessly to preach the Gospel through music. She said "I do it for Jesus; it is my passion." She will be sorely missed here on earth but she now works her music directly for our Lord. She is survived by her husband, George A. Summerford; her children, Ginger S. Gorrell, Grant M. Summerford and Ginny C. Cobb; her mother, Mary M. Miller; her grandchildren, Annabel, Clara and Alan and her brother, Fred M. Miller. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Pinecrest Baptist Church Music Fund 1285 Ashley Hall Rd. Charleston, SC 29407.
