Gertrude McIntyre DuFort, 101, widow of Leo Benedict DuFort, passed away peacefully in her home at The Canterbury House on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The Rite of Committal, at St. Lawrence Cemetery, will be private. The family will receive friends this Friday afternoon between 5:00PM and 7:00PM at The James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. Her guestbook may be signed at www.JamesAMcAlister.com. Gertrude was born on August 25, 1912, in New York City to Henry Francis McIntyre and Kathryn McGoldrick McIntyre. She was married to her husband Leo on September 9, 1935, and they settled in Charleston, his home. Gertrude retired as a pharmacy technician at the Medical University of South Carolina. She was a member of the Cathedral Women's Club, Democratic Women, and the State Retirees Association of South Carolina. She was also past Cathedral Church Catholic Woman of the Year. "Nana", as she was lovingly known by her grands and great-grands, was the matriarch of our family and a true "prayer warrior". She was kind to everyone she met, but did not hesitate to speak out when she felt it was needed (even if it was to an MUSC physician!). She once appeared before Judge Richard Fields to advocate for a daughter (traffic ticket) and he later told her husband that she would have made a great lawyer. She loved her family, friends, faith and St. Patrick's Day! She is survived by three daughters, Yvonne DuFort Evans (Wilbur), Marie DuFort Palmatier (Phil) and Bonnie DuFort Perry (Bill), all of Charleston; a sister, Virginia McIntyre O'Brien of Florida, New York; grandchildren, Mark Victor Evans, Lewis Wilbur Evans, Jr., Jennifer Perry Ross, Sarah K. Palmatier, Clare Palmatier, and Thomas Emile Palmatier; as well as seven great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marguerite M. Nelson, Dorothy M. Kaufmann and Loraine M. Pulsifer; a brother, Henry McIntyre, Jr., and two grandchildren, Timothy Michael Evans and Colleen Evans Petterson. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
