George Patrick Young

October 4, 1942 — May 21, 2023

George Patrick Young, 80, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 21, 2023 after a brief but devastating illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday May 26, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM Thursday evening, with a 6:30 PM Rosary, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.

George was born In Charleston, SC on October 4, 1942, to William H. Young and Camille Ryan Young and grew up on Maverick Street in the old peninsula city. He was baptized, received his first communion, was confirmed and served as an altar boy at Sacred Heart Church. After moving to Avondale, George served as an usher for well over thirty years and was a member of the Perpetual Adoration team at Blessed Sacrament Parish.

As a young man he worked as an usher for Pastime Amusement Company which managed most of the downtown movie theatres. The ushers, nattily attired in a white coat and dark slacks and armed with a flashlight, showed patrons to their seats and policed the theatre to discourage loud talking and other misbehavior. George later worked in the Maintenance Department at the College of Charleston and retired after more than thirty years of employment with the State of South Carolina.

George Young was initiated into the Knights of Columbus as a member of P.N. Lynch Council 704 in 1967. For over fifty years his passionate dedication to the K of C has led to him serving many years as Warden and being honored as Golden Knight of the year in 2017. George was honored on the fortieth anniversary of the Annual Turkey Day Run as the Honoree for the 2018 race. He volunteered as a race committee member for over forty years to help plan and grow what has become the premier Sk run in the State. He was a true "worker bee."

In addition to his strong support of the 3rd and 4th Degrees of the Knights of Columbus, George was also a member in good standing of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Friends of the Hunley. He also was a reenactor at events throughout the Lowcountry and the southeast.

George's zest for life and corny jokes endeared him to many in the Charleston area. At the time of his death, George had been a resident of the Canterbury House on Market Street for over 12 years where he was known affectionately as "Mayor of The Canterbury House". He was also a member of the "misfits", a loosely organized group of residents and friends including Barbara, Mary, Rick, Bill and others who lent their time and support to George during his illness.

He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by a sister, Rita Jane Young of Beaufort, SC; a brother, Michael Young and his wife, Deborah and a nephew, Kevin Young all of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by Kathleen Geiger, his companion of many years.

Many thanks to the Roper-St Francis Oncology unit and George's care team at NHC health center.
