George Dewey Wells Jr. CHARLESTON - George, 78, passed away November 2, 2009 after an 8 year battle with cancer. The relatives and friends of George D. Wells Jr. are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home ,1620 Savannah Highway at 3:00 P.M. Visitation will be 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the funeral home. George was born November 30, 1930 in Eau Gallie, Florida. He graduated from Martin County High School in Stuart, Florida in 1948. Following graduation, George enlisted in the US Navy on June 29, 1948. He served in the USS Submarine Service for 20 years, retiring on September 16, 1968. He served aboard the USS CLAMAGORE SSN 343, which is moored at Patriots Point, along with eight other submarines during his navy career. The last two years of his Navy career he was an instructor at the FBM trainer at the Charleston Navy Base. He was an auto mechanic after his naval career. He worked at the Ferneau Buick downtown on East Bay St. and Jones Ford in North Charleston. He loved to watch NASCAR races and also did some racing himself at the Summerville Speedway during the late 1960's and early 1970's in the Limited Sportsmen class. He was a member of The Charleston Rifle Club, The Elks Club, Submarine Veterans and a Lifetime and Hall of Fame member of the Greater Charleston USBC Bowling Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nettie "Lou" Wells. Other survivors include son, Wayne Edwin Wells, daughter, Colette Wells Corbett and a sister Jean Fisher (Ray) of Martinsburg, W.Va. Grandchildren, Christopher Wells his wife Sandi, Andrew Wells, Leigh Ann Wells, their mother Nancy Wells and Colette's daughter Nikki Corbett. Two great grandchildren are expected to arrive in November and January.
