George Albert Moraska, Jr., 89, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Charleston, SC on February 7, 1935. He was the oldest of four sons of George A. Moraska, Sr. and Jeanette Elizabeth Weddigen Moraska. George was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Frank and Gary Moraska and sister-in-law, Karon Moraska.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Frances Hendricks Moraska; his three daughters, Kathleen M. Ferri (Michael) of Wadmalaw Island, Yvonne M. Slotkin (Jeffrey) of Charleston and Patti M. Currie of Marion, NC; his brother, Harry Moraska (Jacquie) of Pickens, SC and sister-in-law, Shirley Moraska of Enterprise, AL.
George was very proud of his many grandchildren and he is loved by Jay, Daniel and Samuel Slotkin of North Charleston; Andrew and Emma Ferri of Wadmalaw Island and Micah (Kaylee), Kellyn, Joshua, Kayla, Mark and Hannah Currie of Marion, NC. He also has many nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much.
George was proud to have lived in Charleston all of his life. He grew up on Congress Street, attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Bishop England High School in 1954. George also attended St. Bernard Seminary in Cullman, AL from 1954 to 1957. George loved sports and was a talented athlete. At Bishop England, he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. George had a long career working for the US Postal Service and retired after 33 years of service. His last post was serving as the manager at the Charleston Air Force Base Branch. George then went on to work for the City of Charleston Housing Authority for many years.
One of George’s greatest joys was serving his country. He served briefly in the Navy Reserves, then active duty in the US Army. He then later served for over 20 years in the US Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1995 from the 437th Airlift Wing Command.
George was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he worshipped faithfully, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also loved the congregation at Calvary Lutheran West Ashley, where he had many friends.
George will be remembered for his ability to throw a perfect cast net, knowing the best places to fish and when the shrimp were running, telling stories of growing up on the peninsula, his love of Bishop England and Notre Dame football and Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, his knowledge of US and world history and his ability to paint beautiful pastel Lowcountry scenes.
Family and friends are invited to gather to share in the joy of his homegoing Tuesday, April 2, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at James A. McAlister Funeral Home (1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. His Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Commital will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
