George H. Melfi entered into eternal rest on September 28, 2023 after a long illness. His Rite of Committal will be held 12:00 PM, Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road.
George was born on April 14, 1950, in Charleston, SC, the son of the late Francis George “Skeet” and Mildred Ruth “Rookie” Melfi. He and his former wife, Theresa Cantwell, have three wonderful children and five grandchildren that they both love very much. George was a beloved father, poppa, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
George is survived by his two daughters, Laura Melfi Flint (David), and Rachele Melfi Box (Rhett); three granddaughters, Ashley Flint, Hannah Flint and Caitlin Box; and two grandsons, Thomas Flint and Dylan Box. He was predeceased by his son, Hank Melfi in 2014. He is also survived by a sister, Jan Melfi Craven and was predeceased by his sister, Frances Melfi Roy. He has many nieces and
nephews that miss their Uncle George!
George graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and St. Andrews High School. He attended Trident Technical College, where he received a degree in Horticulture. He retired after 30+ years from the Charleston Naval Shipyard when it closed and was one of the last to leave Shop 38. He retired again after having worked 15+ years at MUSC and continued working as an usher at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center. He enjoyed greeting everyone and also watching the Stingrays in action! After working so hard for so long, George developed a love for beach music and dancing the shag and enjoyed participating in local events and clubs. George was also a member of the local Elks Lodge #242. He was an avid Gamecock fan and we know he will continue to cheer them on from afar.
He is sadly missed by his family and friends.
