George Karl Klump

George Karl Klump, widower of Sue Pepper Klump, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 24, 2019.  The family will receive friends between 4:30 and 6:30 PM this Thursday , February 28, 2019, at 17 East Battery. All other services will be private.

George was born March 12, 1931, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Joseph Karl Klump and Ruth Hill Klump. He moved to the Isle of Palms when he was three months old and grew up on the island as one of its few full-time residents. Later in life , George regaled family and friends with many stories about Jeep drives on the beach, skiing in the surf, and catching not one, but two, wild boars by hand on camping trips.

George proudly served our country in the US Air Force, beginning as an enlisted man for two tours of duty in the Korean War. He then joined the Corp of Cadets and graduated from the Citadel in 1956. He was commissioned as a n officer in the Air Force and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving as a Navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer flying B-52, B-58 and EB-66E. Lieutenant Colonel Klump flew 158 combat missions in his two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. After his military service, he enjoyed working for his real estate customers in the L ow C ountry.

George had a full and happy life .  He enjoyed many multi-family reunion vacations on the Isle of Palms, hunting with his honorary sons Richard Tucker and Sammy Small, fishing for tarpon and yellow - tailed snapper in the Florida Keys, earning a Life Master designation in D uplicate B ridge, cruising the harbor on the “Tipsy Tartan” , and spending time at Awendaw’s Duck Inn with his beloved wife, Sue. He will always be remembered for his enthusiasm for life and his positive attitude, characterized by his catch phrase “Outstanding” and an energetic thumbs - up signal. George was an outstanding son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

His memory will be forever treasured by his daughters, Sue Klump Mevers (Billy) and Sally Klump Ward; four grandchildren: Chris Mevers (DeAnn), Alison Ward, Andrew Ward, Arthur Ward (Rosy); and six great grandchildren.

The family extends gratitude to Quinshanna Solomon for the extraordinary care and love that she gave to George as his caregiver and friend.
