Entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 24, 2010, Mr. George Edward Irwin, Sr. husband of Beulah E. Miller Irwin. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Irwin, Sr. are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Thursday, May 27, 2010, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. this Wednesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM . George Irwin was born in Charleston on December 30, 1921, a son of the late John Jackson and Lillie Hunkler Irwin. He attended Mitchell Elementary, graduated from Charleston High School and honorably served in the U.S. Navy. George worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, earned several awards for outstanding achievement and retired in 1984 after forty-six years of faithful service. He was a lifelong resident of the Charleston area and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Perpetual Adoration. George coached Little League Baseball for the Cooper River Parks & Playground Commission, enjoyed camping, the Lowcountry outdoors and was active in the Golden Age Bowling League. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Beulah M. Irwin, his children: George E. Irwin, Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Brandywine, MD., Michael S. Irwin and his wife, Janice, of Hillsborough, NC. and Cheryl I. Miller and her husband, Mike, of Warner Robins, Ga. his brother, Eugene Irwin and his wife, Dera, of Charleston; his sisters, Lillie Crouch of Daytona Beach, FL, Delores Wrenn of James Island, Charlotte Hanna and her husband, Ron, of James Island, Shirley Hanlon of Monroeville, PA and Frances Blanchard of Mt. Pleasant as well as eleven grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, John J. Irwin, Jr., of Tucson, AZ.
