George Burton Alexander, Sr.

George Burton Alexander, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday, January 3, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.

George was born June 13, 1936, in Charleston, a son of the late Gertrude Marie Mindermann Alexander and Burton Augustus Alexander.

George was a charter member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, West Ashley and attended Saint Mary’s Church, Yonges Island, whenever at Swinton Creek. He has been a member of the Washington Light Infantry since 1956. George served in the Army National Guard 118th Infantry Company B for 9 years and is a charter member of the "Company B" social group. Over the years he was involved in the Men's Club at Saint Joseph and served as their president. He also served as Co-Director for the Cougars Basketball team between 1971 and 1975. He is a former member of the Holy Name Society of Saint Mary’s Church, Charleston and is a member of Charleston Lodge #242 B.P.O. Elks.

Prior to his retirement, he was Building and Maintenance Director for Blessed Sacrament School and Church. His years with the Nuns, teachers and his love for the students was his reward. He was previously with Saint Joseph Church in the same capacity. He first worked for Charleston Upholstery and then at Alexander's Upholstery for 42 years.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Caroline Walker Alexander, his sons, George B. Alexander, Jr. (Tammy) and David C. Alexander, his granddaughters, Audrey Irene Alexander and Maria Lee Alexander, all from Charleston except for nieces and nephews from various places. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clarence R. Alexander, Harold L. (Harry) Alexander, Herbert L. Alexander, Leroy A. Alexander, Leon E. Alexander, and Bernard H. Alexander, and his sisters, Dorothy A. Leary, Gertrude "Ruthie" Oswald and Barbara A. Connolly.

We wish to express our gratitude to Roper St. Francis Hospice and Home Health Services for their constant caring service over this past year “plus”.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bereavement Fund of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
