Frances K. Gibson

Frances K. Gibson, 79, of Charleston, SC, widow of the late John Roy Gibson, Sr., entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 25, 2024. The relatives and friends of Frances K. Gibson are invited to attend her Funeral Service 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Park on Azalea Dr., N. Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Tuesday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.

Frances was born November 1, 1944 in Florence, SC, a daughter of the late George Edward Kendall and Minnie Magnolia Howell Kendall. She graduated Salutatorian from Hanahan High School in 1962 and went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in 1965. Frances married J. Roy Gibson in 1964 and the couple had three sons, John, David, and Jeff. She was a caring and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Frances was a high school English and Journalism teacher for 35 years. Teaching brought her great joy and she was very committed to her students. She was the Charleston County Teacher of the Year for 1991-1992. During an interview related to this recognition, she emphasized the importance of education. She encouraged her students to think for themselves, to question and to create. She said, “Teachers touch the lives of nearly all future leaders. They lead those who will lead. They teach those who will teach, invent, and investigate”.

Frances was a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was active in Bible study and church care groups and causes, and had a strong faith in God. She loved gardening, flowers, and admiring nature’s beauty. Frances loved animals as well, especially cats. Her spirit was kind and generous; she was beautiful inside and out to her friends and family.

Frances is survived by her three children, John R. Gibson, Jr. (Jane), David E. Gibson (Julie), and Jeff T. Gibson (Jennifer), all of Charleston; her three grandchildren, Kayla R. Chavis, Zachary T. Gibson, and Samantha K. Gibson; and her sister, Judy K. Davis of Charleston. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Charles Edward Kendall.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Jenitta Russ for her devotion, friendship, and care of Frances over many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Frances’ memory to charities that fight Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia.
