Ester Birgit Lane

Ester "Birgit" Lane, 96, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 7, 2021, with her family at her bedside.

Birgit was born and grew up in Falun, Sweden. In 1946 she came to the United States to marry the love of her life, Bill Lane, in a storybook romance lasting 63 years. They made their home in Brooklyn, New York, later moved to Miami, Florida, where Birgit loved the beach and the sunshine, and spent their last years in Charleston. Birgit loved to travel back home to Sweden and visited many other countries with Bill all around the world.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband William C. Lane and by her cherished granddaughter Patricia J. Lane.

Birgit is survived by her children: daughter Christine Leonardi and son-in-law Rick; son Charles Lane and daughter-in-law Holly; son William Lane and daughter-in-law Peyton; son Robert Lane and daughter-in-law Debra. Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren: Michael Leonardi and wife Amanda; Kelley Meinke and husband Edward; Daniel Leonardi and wife Shelby; Robert Leonardi and wife Amy; Julie Lane; Christopher Lane and wife Ashley; Cindy Parr and husband Skip, Katrina Lane; and fourteen great-grandchildren as well as one great-great-granddaughter. Birgit is also survived by her sister-in-law Elvy Berg in Sweden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at 2:00 PM at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.
