Eric Massar passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2025, leaving behind a profound impact on the many lives he touched. Known for his vibrant personality, quick wit, and deep compassion, Eric brought people together with his warmth and unmistakable presence. He had a unique ability to make others feel understood, valued, and loved-whether through a shared laugh, a heartfelt conversation, or simply by being himself. His absence is felt deeply, but his memory lives on in the stories, friendships, and joy he leaves behind.
Eric graduated from James Island Charter High School, where he was a proud member of both the swim team and the cross-country team. Summers were spent lifeguarding on Folly Beach (which was only the beginning of his love for Folly), where his love for the water and the outdoors was cemented early on. A true creative, Eric had a passion for painting and self-expression. He was always finding ways to share his talent with others. Many close to Eric were lucky enough to get commissioned paintings and drawings from him, which was just one of many ways he showcased his generous spirit. With a signature flair for fashion, he also graced the many runways during Charleston Fashion Week and did so with so much passion and pride.
Born with a soul truly too vibrant to be contained, Eric lit up the world with his infectious joy, larger-than-life presence, and limitless compassion. Whether he was belting Lady Gaga, photobombing with flair, or strolling down Center St. on Folly dressed as the Grinch, Eric made the mundane feel magical. He was a sassy, spunky, kind-hearted original-one who never met a stranger and made everyone feel seen and celebrated.
Eric's generosity extended far beyond his smile. He never missed a birthday or milestone, remembered every detail that mattered, and found joy in making others laugh-often until they cried. He painted from the heart, gave the best hugs imaginable, and showed up for people in ways they will never forget. Eric had a deep love for animals and was known for instantly connecting with every pet he met, often getting down on the floor to shower them with affection. He painted heartfelt tributes of lost pets for friends and family, and shared a lifelong bond with his beloved family dog, Curtis-a friendship that reflected his gentle, loyal nature.
From childhood swim meets to late-night talks under the Charleston stars, Eric's legacy is imprinted on so many lives. His friendship was a gift-silly, deep, electric-and his love was pure magic. He was the kind of best friend who stuck, who danced through the darkest days, who held your hand and made you feel like the most important person in the world.
The world is dimmer without him, but brighter because he was ever in it.
Eric is survived by his parents, Thomas and Mary Massar; his sister Andrea Kostinas (Matthew) and adored nephews Ryan and Benjamin; brother Stephen Massar; and sister Sarah Massar. He is also survived by his paternal Grandmother, Mary Massar and several aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly. He also leaves behind his partner, Adam Whisenant, countless friends, chosen family, and a community forever changed by his love.
