Ephraim A. Clark of Charleston, S.C. entered eternal rest on January 4, 2010, at age 94. He has been a resident of Charleston since 1951. Mr. Clark is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mercedes Foley Clark and four children: sons, Ephraim and wife Maria, Michael and wife Julie; daughters Catherine de Liesseline and Christine Renfro; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 8, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. The Family will receive friends this Thursday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home 1620 Savannah Hwy. A Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 pm. Ephraim was born on December 21, 1915 and raised on a small farm near Jefferson City, Missouri. He attended St. Peter's School and Jefferson City Elementary and High School through the 12th grade and then attended St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. While studying at St. Louis University, he also sang in the St. Louis Municipal Opera where he was discovered and put under contract in Hollywood by 20th Century Fox. He broke his contract and moved to Chicago, Ill. He was drafted into the army on March 17, 1941 as a private and served the next five years in World War II. He became an officer in June 1942 and three months later was promoted to Commanding Officer of an anti-aircraft battery for the duration of the War. He participated in the Invasion of Europe in June 1944, landing at Omaha Beach. He also participated in the defense of the Port of Antwerp, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. His battery destroyed 235 V1 pilotless Buzz bombs directed to the Port of Antwerp and he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious service. He left the service in 1950 with the rank of Major. He was co-owner of Gas Engine and Electric Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1977. He then devoted his time to investing, planting and gardening at his home in Edgewater Park.
