Emilie North Bates Welsh, widow of Joseph William Welsh, Jr., entered into eternal rest on November 11, 2015. She was born in Charleston on March 17, 1936, a daughter of Margaret Balentine Moore and John "Jack" Seay Bates. A graduate of Saint Andrews High School in Charleston, SC, she attended the University of South Carolina. She has been a resident of Birmingham since 1980. Emilie's long career in Real Estate was a source of joy in her life where she developed life-long friendships. Emilie was very proud of the work she did with children, especially the Girl Scouts of Tyler, TX and Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to many years as a Girl Scout leader she was also a founder and organizer of one of the largest primitive day camps in western Pennsylvania. A longtime and active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Emilie served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist, a Sunday greeter and participated in many church panels and committees. Emilie is survived by her 5 children: Emilie Elizabeth "Beth" Snow (Bill-Deceased) residing in Auburn, IN, Helen Octavia Welsh (Olli Seefried) residing in Gainesville, FL, Beatrice Anne Schratt (Dr. Walter) residing in Debary, FL, Joseph William Welsh III (Lori) and John Bates Welsh (Corey) both reside in Birmingham, AL. Emilie was blessed with 10 Grandchildren: William Jerome Snow, Michael Bates Snow, Emilie Sarah Snow, Katharina Gertrud Schratt, Beatrice Elizabeth Schratt, Walter John Schratt, Joseph William Welsh IV, Turner Cedric Welsh, Jack North Welsh and Henry Martin Welsh, Her two sisters: Margaret "Margie" Elizabeth Bates Moore and Jacqueline "Jackie" Sarah Bates Lawson both residing in Mount Pleasant, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years of marriage, Joseph William Welsh, Jr. and her parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 16, 2015 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Birmingham. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rite of Committal will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston, SC on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 10:30 AM. Arrangements by James A. McAlister Funerals & Cremation.
