Elizabeth 'Betty' Nutt Stafford died on Thursday, August 10, 2023 in Charleston, SC. Her funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, August 18 in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston. There will be a private burial in Greensboro, NC at a later date.

Betty was born April 4, 1927 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Robert Hamilton Nutt and Elizabeth Pilcher Nutt. She was predeceased by her husbands, Clement Lowrey Stafford, Jr. and Charles Allan Matthews. She was also predeceased by her brother Robert Hamilton Nutt, Jr., and her son-in-law Gaillard Townsend Dotterer.

Betty attended grade school in Greensboro, NC, St. Mary's High School in Raleigh, Finch Junior College in New York City, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. In 1947, she married her longtime sweetheart Larry 'Bubber' Stafford at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, where she was a lifelong member and devoted to the altar guild.

Betty was a passionate golfer, always making new friends on the golf course as she moved with her family to Larchmont, NY, Nashville, TN and finally back to Greensboro, close to her beloved NC mountains. Along the way, she contributed to many organizations and clubs, adding grace, dignity, and kindness, winning the hearts of all who knew her.

Betty ('Bobo') is survived by her two children, Clement Lowrey Stafford III (Libby) of Greensboro and Barbara Stafford Dotterer of Wadmalaw Island; stepson, Douglas Graves Matthews (Theresa) of New Orleans; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Stafford White (Ian) of Charlotte, Jacquelyn Stafford Tugwell (Matt) of Charlotte, Thomas Stafford Graham (Sage) of Statesboro, GA; and five great-grandchildren. She is she also survived by her brother William Virden Nutt (Sue) and sister-in-law Aurelia Fulton Stafford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Employee Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412 or Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Greene Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.

The family is deeply grateful to the many loving and caring Bishop Gadsden staff members who have enriched our lives and for so many years.
