Elizabeth C. "Betty" Smith

October 15, 1930 — December 6, 2015

Charleston - Mrs. Elizabeth C. "Betty" Smith, 85, a retired Comptroller for the Charleston Weapons Station and Editor of the base "Stars and Stripes" newspaper, and widow of Elbert Darnell "Buddy" Smith, peacefully entered into eternal rest Sunday, December 6, 2015., at her home. The relatives and friends of Elizabeth C. Smith are invited to attend her Funeral Service 2:00 PM Friday, December 11, 2015 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.Betty was born October 15, 1930 in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of the late Elizabeth Gober and Theodore Cunard. She was an avid reader who, after receiving her first library card in First Grade, said that a "whole new world" had been opened to her. She never forgot that her first hardback reader was "The Gingerbread Boy", a book she received in first grade. Betty was loved and adored by her pastors and church family at Crossroads Community Church of James Island. She especially drew comfort from the music offered by the worship band, Route 33. Since 2009, Betty had been sharing the home of her daughter Karin and son-in-law Walter. This was a joyous time for her, during which she and her "sister friend" Betty Kastner read the Bible through twice and had just started for a 3rd time. Mrs. Kastner was with Betty every Tuesday and Thursday from 2009 until the present, and was a great source of love and encouragement.Betty is survived by her 5 children: Karin McAdory and husband Walter, Billy Smith and wife Terri, Eddie Smith and wife Carol, Anne Schiffiano, and Patti Wolfe and husband Stephen Slaughter; 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Cunard, her grandson, Buddy Wolfe, and her son-in-law, Tony Schiffiano.Memorials in Betty's honor may be made to Crossroads Community Church of James Island, P.O. Box 1188, Folly Beach, SC 29439.
