Elizabeth Grace Norton

October 30, 1932 — August 15, 2018

Elizabeth Grace Norton, (nee McMenamin), 85, longtime resident of James Island, passed into eternal rest on Wednesday August 15, 2018, after a long and difficult battle with Alzheimer’s. The relatives and friends of Elizabeth Grace (McMenamin) Norton are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service.

Born in New York City to Alfred A. Myers and Grace Hortense Myers, “Liz” grew up during the Great Depression, attended St. Thomas Aquinas College, Montclair State College and the College of Charleston. She held 2 Master's degrees, one in English and one in Education. She taught fifth grade English at Memminger Elementary, Nativity School, and Blessed Sacrament, where she very much enjoyed the camaraderie of her coworkers as well as a sincere love for all the students she taught over the years.

Twice married and twice widowed, Liz was a most loyal and loving wife and devoted mother to her children: Elizabeth McMenamin of San Diego, Edward McMenamin of Dublin, Ireland, Maggie McMenamin of North Charleston, Mary McMenamin of Columbia, Neal Michael McMenamin (deceased) and Ann Patricia McMenamin (deceased), her daughter-in-law Leticia Nava McMenamin of Dublin, and son-in-law Stephen A. Ryan of North Charleston. Liz is also survived by her two beloved granddaughters, Eilish Marie McMenamin of Dublin, Ireland, and Aura Mairead McMenamin of Dublin, Ireland.

Liz bore the many experiences of her long life, both happy and sad, with all the dignity of one whose life was grounded in her Catholic faith. She had a wonderful sense of humor, too. She loved books and believed education was the key to freedom. Liz had a very forgiving heart and a deep love for her family and her Catholic faith. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in her name may be made to the Nativity Catholic School Library Fund.
