Ned was born May 4, 1932, in Charleston, SC, a son of Edwin J. Thornhill, Sr. and Frances Kelly Thornhill of Charleston. Ned grew up on what was then rural James Island. He loved all things outdoors and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and stayed active in the Boy Scouts for many years. Ned attended Porter Military Academy and graduated from Clemson University in 1954. While at Clemson, Ned played football and lettered in swimming and golf. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, retiring as a Captain. While in the army, Ned said he played many rounds of golf with his commanding officers. His love of golf was rivaled only by his love of fishing and the outdoors. When not on the golf course, he could be found on his fishing boat, the Laff-A-Lot. Ned was an accomplished fisherman, catching the first blue marlin out of Charleston and the third off of the SC coast. He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed his time at the Combahee Hunt Club. In later years, Ned could be found on the deck at his home in Rockville. He was convinced that the sun would not properly set, nor the tide go in or out, if he were not on the deck to watch it. Ned was the co-owner of Charleston Oil Company, which was founded by his father and uncle, and run by him and his two cousins, Van Noy and Tommy Thornhill. After selling Charleston Oil, Ned had an active career in Real Estate, working for Huffines Company, and then founding Thornhill Properties with his son, Frank. Ned was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Charleston, the Huguenot Society of SC, The Carolina Yacht Club and the infamous Apple Dumpling Gang. Ned was known for his incredible patience, quick wit, kindness and quiet demeanor. He was a true southern gentleman and will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Ned is survived by his wife of sixty years, Martha Woodall Thornhill; a daughter, Martha Thornhill Walters and a son, Frank Dunnington Thornhill. He is loved and survived by 6 grandchildren: Parker, Caroline and Lawson Walters and Edwin, Thomas and Capers Thornhill.
