And it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. Hebrews 9:27 Edward Emmit Pettus died at home, Thursday, December 13, 2012 from natural causes. He was 91. Mr. Pettus knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior. His family can rejoice in knowing that their devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather are now, and for eternity, in the presence of his Creator. Mr. Pettus loved his family and invested his life in service to them: His wife of 58 years, Glynn Frakes Pettus, his son, David Edward Pettus of Charleston and wife, Anne; his daughter, Connie Pettus Glass of Sanford, NC, and husband, David; grandchildren: Joni Glass Thompson of Fayetteville, NC, and husband, Michael; Jason Wesley Glass of Bangkok, Thailand, and wife, Christy, Kevin Truitt Glass of Bear Creek, NC and two great-grandchildren, Molly Anna and Samuel Elliot Thompson of Fayetteville, NC. The eighth of ten children, Mr. Pettus was born January 11, 1921 to Henry and Mary Macy Norwood Pettus in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents and nine siblings. Mr. Pettus served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. Until his last breath, Mr. Pettus attained the highest respect and admiration from his family. At 89, Mr. Pettus could be seen riding around the neighborhood on his bicycle and doing push-ups, pull-ups and anything else he could come up with in his makeshift, backyard gym. His children grew up believing their father could do and fix anything because that is what he was always about - doing and fixing. Mr. Pettus dedicated his fatherhood to teaching his children to conserve everything and to "think it through" before doing anything. One of his most favored sayings, and he had many, was "Is this trip necessary?" This often-used phrase was born as his children obtained the coveted license to drive. His children were, at times, given to so much thought and consideration, that many a proposed trip was deemed just not worth it. The Pettus kids have been blessed with a wise and clever dad. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that gifts to honor the memory of Mr. Pettus be given to The Gideon's International, Water Missions International or to a Christ-honoring organization of one's choice. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a worship service on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Fort Johnson Baptist Church, 1473 Camp Road, with family visitation in the church sanctuary one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8
