Dr. Warren Young Adkins, Jr., husband of Margaret Canady Adkins, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Y. Adkins, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.

Warren Young was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 8, 1940, a son of Sarah Cannon Adkins and Warren Young Adkins, Sr. and grandson of Clifford DeVoe Cannon and Pearl Reeves Cannon. He was reared in Hemingway, SC and graduated from Hemingway High School. Deek played football for Hemingway High and was an active boy scout. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

He attended the University of South Carolina and was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Debate Team.
Deek attended the Medical College of South Carolina and was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society. He completed his internship in General Surgery and residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1970. Deek was a Major in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, SC during the Vietnam War.
He completed his Fellowship in Temporal Bone Histopathology at UCLA in 1973. Deek became a member of the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1973. He became the Chairman of the Department in 1978 and retired in 1998. Deek enjoyed seeing patients, operating, and teaching residents. He authored over 100 articles in scientific journals and wrote a book chapter.

Deek was a member of the Charleston County Medical Society, SC Medical Society, President of Academic Departments in Otolaryngology and a member of the Triological Society. He was a member of the Bronchoesphological Society, Emeritus Member of the American Otological Society, the Deafness Research Foundation, the American Laryngology Association, and Director of the American Board of Otolaryngology. He served on multiple committees at the Medical University of South Carolina and was also a member of the Head and Neck Society.

On June 29, 1962, he married Margaret Canady (Skippy) Adkins. Deek was an active member of Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church. He was a well-known surgeon and professor who helped obtain the first National Institutes of Health Grants and performed the first cochlear implants in the Southeast.

Deek is survived by his wife, Skippy; his children: Warren Young Adkins III and Stella Adkins Gadsden (Christopher); his brother, Clifford Cannon Adkins (Evelyn); nieces, Carrie Elizabeth and Sarah Coffey Adkins; his brother-in-law, Horace Greeley Canady, Jr. (Macy) and a nephew, James Bowman Canady.
