Dr. Walton Linton Jones, Jr.

Dr. Walton Linton Jones, Jr., died at his home in Fort Myers Florida, May 5, 2010, at age 91. Dr. Jones was born on December 4, 1918 in McCaysville, Georgia, to Walton Linton Jones and Pearl Josephine Gilliam Jones. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Emory University in Atlanta Georgia in 1939 and remained there and earned his Medical Doctor Degree in 1942. Dr. Jones entered the Navy as a Command Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in 1942 and advanced through the grades to Captain in 1956. He married Caroline Wells Schachte of Charleston, South Carolina, on June 5, 1943. He retired from the Navy in 1966 and was awarded the Legion of Merit for Research Management. Dr Jones continued in his last Navy assignment, Director of Biotechnology and Human Research, HQ NASA, as a civil servant upon his retirement from the Navy. He earned the Exceptional Service Medal in 1979 and the Outstanding Leadership Medal in 1985 upon his retirement from NASA. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Schachte Jones; three children; Walton Linton Jones III, Francis Stephen Jones, and Kathleen Caroline Jones Lin; and nine grandchildren. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Walton L. Jones, Jr. are invited to attend his funeral service at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 13, 2010 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Wednesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
