Dr. Richard Hans Unger

Dr. Richard H. Unger, affectionately known as Doc, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at age of 83. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday, May 7, 2021 at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Yonges Island, 4255 Highway 165. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Richard was born in Manhattan, NY an immigrant son to Hans and Agnes Unger. Graduating Iona College and attending Medical school at then Seton Hall he was married, fathered twin sons and served as an Army surgeon during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Yokohama, Japan, he gained invaluable medical skills and then returned with his family to the United States. Eventually settling in Auburn, NY, he fathered a daughter and became a respected community leader, chief surgeon and touched the lives of all he encountered.

Unique was his bedside manner, and his unselfish care and ability to freely speak the truth endeared lifelong friends to his side. Moving South, Richard and Sandra made Meggitt, SC their home and they eventually relocated to Summerville. In the South he volunteered and served his community and enjoyed his family, and final years.

Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sandra Unger, his sister, Marion Woodward of Pennsylvania, his son and daughter in-law, Eric and Patsy Unger of Summerville, along with their children Abigail, Gabrielle, Vaughn and Sophia. His son and daughter in-law, Greg and Michele Unger of Metairie, LA, along with their children Avery and Jack. His daughter and son in-law, Stephanie and David Kannon of Mount Pleasant, SC, along with their children Alexandra and James, as well as his fat yellow lab, Daisy.

He will be welcomed into the Father’s Kingdom by many and will be missed and remembered here on earth. In memory please pay an act of random kindness forward to help touch and improve another’s life. Serving one another is the key to happiness.
